city, ChaudireAppalaches region, southern Quebec province, Canada, on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. It was founded in 1678 and named after Charles Huault de Montmagny, the second governor of New France. Located 35 miles (56 km) northeast of Quebec city, it has become an important industrial centre. Manufactures include silk and rayon textiles, stoves, pumps, furniture, electrical appliances, and dairy products. It also has several printing plants. The city is served by the main line of the Canadian National Railway, the Trans-Canada Highway, an airport, and ferry connections to the leaux Grues (Island of Cranes). Inc. city, 1966. Pop. (1991) 11,861.
