village, Lake county, northeastern Illinois, U.S. It is a northern suburb of Chicago. Founded in 1835, it was successively known as Mechanics Grove, Holcomb, Rockefeller, and Area. In 1926 it was renamed in honour of Cardinal George Mundelein, archbishop of Chicago (191539), who was host to the Eucharistic Congress held at St. Mary of the Lake Seminary (opened in 1921), which borders the village on the north. Mundelein is mainly residential. Inc. 1909. Pop. (1990) 21,224; (1994 est.) 23,995.
