born April 11, 1776, Kirkintilloch, Dunbartonshire, Scot. died Feb. 11, 1847, Edinburgh Scottish lawyer, first professor of conveyancing at the University of Edinburgh, who was an innovative editor of the Supplement to the 4th, 5th, and 6th editions of Encyclopdia Britannica and editor of the 7th edition. Napier studied at Glasgow and Edinburgh universities. Apprenticed to a member of the Society of Writers to the Signet (lawyers), he became the society's librarian (1805) and in 1816 was chosen by it for the first lectureship (later professorship) in conveyancing founded by the society at Edinburgh University. Although not so distinguished a scholar as some editors of the Britannica, Napier influenced the encyclopaedia's development by acquiring as contributors a host of knowledgeable, independent-minded specialists.
