NARD

Latin Neretum, town, Lecce provincia, Puglia (Apulia) regione, southeastern Italy, southwest of Lecce city. Originally the Roman city of Neretum, Nard was both Byzantine and Norman; it has a 13th14th-century cathedral in the Gothic style and an unusual circular chapel called the Osanna, dating from 1603. Examples of Baroque architecture in the town include the Church of San Domenico. Modern Nard is an agricultural centre, trading in wheat, olive oil, and tobacco. Pop. (1991 prelim.) mun., 31,066.
