Nauruan Naoero, officially Republic of Nauru, country in the southwestern Pacific Ocean. It consists of a solitary raised coral island located in southeastern Micronesia, 25 miles (41 kilometres) south of the Equator. The island is about 2,480 miles northeast of Sydney, Australia, and a slightly greater distance southwest of Honolulu. Nauru has a total land area of about 8 square miles (21 square kilometres) and a circumference of 12 miles. The capital is Yaren administrative centre. Oval in shape, it has a circumference of 12 miles (19 km) and an area of 8 square miles (21 square km). Nauru's capital is Yaren administrative centre. Pop. (1994 est.) 10,200.
