Named for Christ's childhood home of Nazareth, this Atlantic fishing port and resort occupies two levels, the lower one extending along the beach. A pilgrimage chapel overlooks the town at 360 feet (110 m) from the upper level. The inhabitants, said to be of Phoenician origin, are among Europe's most distinctive people. The characteristic dress of the community and its religious ceremonies associated with fishing are local attractions. The port is also a centre for sardine and mackerel fishing. Pop. (1981) town, 6,954; (1987 est.) concelho, 16,000.
