It lies on the western boundary of the Tyneside metropolitan area. A residential and manufacturing district, it has a large industrial estate. The Anglo-Scottish Battle of Newburn was fought there in 1640. The Church of St. Michael and All Angels dates from 1190. Pop. (1991) 42,897.
