city and northwestern suburb of the city of Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro state, Brazil. Formerly called Maxambamba, it lies in the Sarapu River valley, at 85 feet (26 m) above sea level. The city's varied industries include marmalade and orange juice factories, vegetable canneries, and plants manufacturing chemicals and pharmaceutical products. Extensive orange groves are in the agricultural hinterland. The main railroad and highway linking Rio de Janeiro with So Paulo pass nearby. Pop. (1980) 491,766.
