Hebrew 'amri (reigned 876869 or c. 884c. 872 BC), king of Israel, the father of Ahab. Omri is mentioned briefly and unfavourably in the Bible (I Kings 16; Micah 6:16) but is thought by modern scholars to have been one of the most important rulers of the northern kingdom. His name appears frequently in Assyrian inscriptions, and he is known to have conquered Moab, formed an alliance with Tyre, and moved the capital of Israel to Samaria.
