public, coeducational institution of higher learning in Corvallis, Ore., U.S. It is a comprehensive research university with land-, sea-, and space-grant status. The university comprises 11 colleges and a graduate school. It offers undergraduate and graduate study in forestry, oceanography, pharmacy, agriculture, business, engineering, health, education, veterinary medicine, and arts and sciences. The university's Mark O. Hatfield Marine Science Center is at Yaquina Bay in Newport. Other research facilities include the Integrated Plant Protection Center and the Hinsdale Wave Research Facility. Oregon State operates extension service centres in each county throughout the state. Total enrollment is approximately 14,000. The history of the university began with the founding of Corvallis College, a preparatory academy, in 1858. The academy, operated for a time by Methodists, began teaching college-level courses in 1865. In 1868 the academy, under partial control of the state, was elevated to a college and received land-grant status; agriculture was added to the curriculum. In 1885 the state took complete control of the college, and the name was changed to the Oregon Agricultural College. It became Oregon State College in 1920 and was awarded university standing in 1961. Linus Pauling, twice awarded Nobel Prizes, was an alumnus of the university.
