It is situated in the Polish Uplands just north of the Holy Cross Mountains. Ostrowiec Swietokrzyski is noted for its iron industry and has road connections with Lublin and Kielce. The town was settled in the 15th century and developed during the 19th century after the establishment of its ironworks. Its other industries include food processing and the production of ceramics and building materials. Pop. (1991 est.) 79,200.
