Meaning of PESHTIGO in English

city, Marinette county, northeastern Wisconsin, U.S. It is situated on the Peshtigo River, 49 miles (79 km) north-northeast of Green Bay. On Oct. 8, 1871, the date of the more famous but less deadly Chicago fire, winds whipped Wisconsin forest fires that had been burning for several days, destroying 1,200,000 acres (500,000 hectares); in a few hours Peshtigo was burned to the ground, with 1,152 known deaths. A monument commemorating those who died is in Peshtigo Fire Cemetery. Peshtigo is a manufacturing community; its chief products are lumber, paper and paper products, and boats. Dairying supplements the economy. Inc. 1903. Pop. (1990) 3,154.
