PETRALONA SKULL

Meaning of PETRALONA SKULL in English

hominid fossil dating from possibly 70,000 years ago found in a cave near Thessalonki, in eastern Greece, by two Greek archaeologists in 1960. The skull was found attached to a stalactitic column. The jaw was missing, but the cranium was almost complete. The skull has a large brow and a slanting forehead, and, from the structure of the face, the jaw is estimated to have been larger than the known Neanderthal man. Nevertheless, the skull is considered to belong to an early Neanderthal type that is comparable to that of Kabwe man (found in Africa) and also related to certain European equivalents.
