PTOLEMAS

town, Kozani noms (department), west central Macedonia, northern Greece. It is situated in a mountain pass, the Sten Komnou; nearby an earth-fill dam across the Perdika River was completed in 1962 for water distribution. The first of six thermal electric power plants was completed there in 1959. These are fuelled by abundant local lignite. The power stations enhanced the emergence of Ptolemas as an industrial centre for the production of sulfuric acid and nitrate fertilizers, as well as lignite. Pop. (1981) 22,109.
