QUERAND

Meaning of QUERAND in English

South American Indians who inhabited the Argentine Pampas between Cabo Blanco on the Atlantic coast and the Crdoba Mountains on the western shores of the Ro de la Plata. Their language has been entirely lost. Little is known of the Querand other than their similarity to related types of South American plains nomads. They were hunters and gatherers, catching game with bolas and fish with nets. The adoption of the horse transformed Querand life, as it did that of other plains Indians. They formed large nomadic bands and made war against other Indians and against the Spaniards. The Querand disappeared from history after 1678. They either became totally extinct or survived under the name of Pampa Indians.
