An important agricultural-trade and jute-exporting centre, it is connected by road with English Bazar and with Dinajpur (in Bangladesh). Rice milling is an important industry. Raiganj was declared a municipality in 1951 and has a college affiliated with the University of North Bengal. Pop. (1991 prelim.) 62,014.
