Dairying, meat and coffee processing, and talc pulverizing are the principal economic activities. A marble quarry is located nearby, as is a military school. Resende, on the Presidente Dutra Highway between the cities of Rio de Janeiro and So Paulo, is also easily accessible by railroad. Pop. (1980 prelim.) 36,633.
