The city serves as a rail junction connecting Lahti, Tampere, and Hmeenlinna in the north to the ports of Helsinki and Porvoo (Borg) to the south. Local industry includes a glassworks, the largest in Finland, and textile mills. The city has a glass museum and a museum of railroad signalling. Pop. (1982 est.) mun., 24,005.
