Meaning of RIO CUARTO in English

city, southwestern Crdoba provincia, northwestern Argentina. It lies along the Cuarto River between the western reaches of the Pampas and the foothills of the Sierra de los Cndores and La Grande de Crdoba. The city was inaugurated in 1794 under the sponsorship of Governor Rafael de Sobremonte, the Spanish intendant. It was the site of several skirmishes during the civil wars (182030). The city is a rail junction with an agricultural economy (fruit, meat-packing, and flour milling) and some light industrial development. Notable landmarks include the cathedral, dating from 1797, and the Municipal Museum of Fine Arts (1933). Pop. (1980) 110,254.
