Meaning of RIVIRE-DU-LOUP in English

city, Bas-Saint-Laurent region, southeastern Quebec province, Canada, about 100 miles (160 km) northeast of Quebec city on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River. The site, at the mouth of the Rivire-du-Loup (Wolf River), was a mission centre in 1683; in 1791 it became part of the seigniory of Andrew Fraser. Settled in 1834, it was named Fraserville. In 1919 it was renamed Rivire-du-Loup for the wolf packs that once roamed the area. The city soon became a commercial, industrial, and transportation centre; its chief products are lumber, pulp and paper, and furniture. Power is provided by a hydroelectric plant on the Wolf River. Among the city's educational institutions are a teachers' college and an arts and crafts school. The city is also the centre of a resort area. Inc. municipality, 1842; city, 1874. Pop. (1991) 14,017.
