(Hippotragus equinus), African antelope, family Bovidae (order Artiodactyla), found in small groups on plains and scrublands. Related to the sable antelope (Hippotragus niger) and to the extinct blaauwbok, or bluebuck (H. leucophoeus), the roan antelope is a large, graceful animal standing 130150 centimetres (5060 inches) at the shoulder. Both sexes have long, pointed ears, an erect mane, long, sickle-shaped horns, and long hair on the throat. The coat is reddish gray to reddish brown, with black and white face markings and a white muzzle and white underparts.
