extinct genus of early reptiles, found as fossils in Permian deposits (245 to 286 million years old) of North America. Romeria is included among the cotylosaurs, a group considered to be the stem reptilian stock, but it occurs too late in the geologic record to have been ancestral to more advanced forms; it probably represents the persistence of a primitive stock alongside more advanced forms.
