Meaning of ROMNY in English

city, Sumy oblast (province), northern Ukraine. The city lies along the Sula River. It was founded as a fortress in the 11th century, and, after a period under Polish rule, it was returned to Russia in 1632. It was captured by Charles XII of Sweden in 1708. Incorporated in 1781, it now has varied industries, including engineering and consumer-goods production. An agricultural college and a medical school are also located there. Pop. (1991 est.) 57,700.
