also called Rupnagar, city, administrative headquarters of Ropar district, Punjab state, northwestern India. The city lies on the Sutlej River near the head of the great Sirhind Canal. The terminus of a branch rail line, Ropar is a marketplace for agricultural products and has small weaving and iron products industries. There is a college in the city. Ropar district, 805 sq mi (2,086 sq km) in area, is a tract of flat floodplain, located just west of Chandigarh. Pop. (1981) city, 25,165; district, 716,662.
