city, Bavaria Land (state), southeastern Germany, at the confluence of the Inn and Mangfall rivers, southeast of Munich, just west of the scenic Chiemsee (lake) and north of the Austrian border. An important medieval trading town on the route from Italy to northern Europe, its many flat-roofed buildings reflect the Italian influence. Chartered in 1864, it is an administrative centre and the economic and communications centre of the Bavarian lower Alpine region. Medieval squares and old houses survive, and the 15th-century parish church was rebuilt in 1881. There is a technical school for the city's important timber industry. Pop. (1989 est.) 54,304.
