city, in South Kyongsang do (province), southern South Korea. Islands such as Ch'ongsan, Sinsu, and Nuk screen the city's deepwater port. Its industries, which were traditionally based on fishing and fish processing, were diversified during the 1970s. Pottery and tile making are based on extensive kaolin (China clay) deposits in the vicinity. One of the main seafood plants (Undaria pinnatfida; Korean: miyok) consumed by Koreans is cultivated there. Thousands of cranes inhabit the island of Samhak southwest of the city. Pop. (1985) 62,466; (1990) 62,831.
