The chief city of the southeastern region, San Pedro de Macors has an economy centred on the sugar industry. Its modern port handles much of the nation's exports, including sugar, molasses, cattle, and timber. Industries include corn milling, the manufacture of clothing, and soap and alcohol distilling. The Universidad Central del Este was founded in 1970. It is located on the main highway linking Santo Domingo with Higey. Pop. (1981) 78,562.
