SANG-DE-BOEUF

Meaning of SANG-DE-BOEUF in English

(French: oxblood), a glossy, blood-red glaze, often with turquoise streaks, imitated in Europe from the 18th century from Chinese lang porcelain of the Ch'ing dynasty, especially the reigns of K'ang-hsi (16611722) and Ch'ien-lung (173596). Called ch'ui hung (blown red) by the Chinese, the glaze owes its colour to the presence of copper, which turns red in a kiln with a reducing atmosphere; i.e., one in which oxygen is replaced by carbon monoxide.
