Meaning of SANGRUR in English

city, in southeastern Punjab state, northwestern India. The city was founded in the 17th century and became the capital of the former independent state of Jind. In 1948 it became part of India. Sangrur is an agricultural market with some light industry, including handloom weaving and handicrafts. There are good road and rail connections with the rest of Punjab and with neighbouring states. Sangrur lies in a region that is largely flat and dry, with a large area under irrigation. The principal crops in the area are wheat, cotton, gram (a legume), and millet. Pop. (1981) 45,220.
