The town functions as a market centre for the Indian villages in the vicinity. Corn (maize), beans, and livestock are the principal products. The ruins of Utatln, former capital of the Quich Indians, and mineral baths are nearby. The city is connected by road with Chichicastenango and Sacapulas and is 100 miles (160 km) from Guatemala City. Pop. (1989 est.) 14,483.
