SANTONIN

toxic drug obtained from the dried flower heads of various Asiatic species of Artemisia. A derivative of santoninic acid, santonin has been used orally as an anthelmintic (worming agent). Santonin was one of the first anthelmintics used to combat Ascaris (intestinal roundworm) infestation in humans and animals. It has been replaced by more effective and less toxic drugs.
