The settlement, originally called Santo Antnio do Jaguari and then So Joo do Jaguari, was given town status in 1859 and was made the seat of a municipality in 1880. The city serves as a trade centre for an agricultural region that produces coffee, rice, cotton, feijo (beans), sugarcane, and various fruits. The city also manufactures textiles, ceramics, shoes, furniture, and agricultural machinery. Goods are transported by rail, road, and air to So Paulo, the state capital, 162 miles (261 km) south.
