SEATTLE SLEW

(foaled 1974), American racehorse (Thoroughbred), the first unbeaten racer ever to win the U.S. Triple Crown. Foaled by My Charmer and sired by Bold Reasoning, the colt Slew was unbeaten in his racing career when in 1977 he won the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, Ky., the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico, Md., and the Belmont Stakes at Belmont Park, N.Y., sweeping the Triple Crown. He was trained by Billy Turner and ridden by Jean Cruguet. He won more money, $641,370, in 1977 than any other horse and was Horse of the Year. In 1978 owners Mickey and Karen Taylor and Jim and Sally Hill sold Seattle Slew, whom they had bought for $17,500 in 1975, to a syndicate headed by Brownell Combs, for $12,000,000, a record sum later surpassed by Spectacular Bid's $22,000,000 syndication in 1980. He was retired to stud in 1978. In his racing career of 17 races, he won 14, was second twice, and fourth once.
