SHERBO, VITALY

born Jan. 13, 1972, Minsk, Belarus, U.S.S.R. Belarusian gymnast who was the first gymnast to win six gold medals in one Olympics. Sherbo, the son of athletes, quickly advanced in Soviet sports, competing in his first gymnastics meet at the age of seven. At age 15 he became a member of the Soviet national team, and his first significant success came in 1989, when he placed fourth in the combined event (encompassing all six gymnastic disciplines) at the Chunichi Cup in Nagoya, Japan. In 1990 in Minsk, Sherbo won his first national championshipin the last Soviet national championship tournamentand attracted international attention with victories at the Goodwill Games in Seattle, Wash., the Blume Memorial in Barcelona, Spain, and the Chunichi Cup, where he also won four individual events. Although he finished second at the World Cup combined exercises in Brussels and fifth in that competition at the European championships in Lausanne, Switz., Sherbo won individual gold medals at the European championships in the horizontal bar and the floor exercise and at both meets in the vault. He scored a perfect 10an exceptional achievement in men's gymnasticsin the vault at the 1990 Goodwill Games, and another 10 in the pommel horse at the 1991 U.S.S.R. Cup, where he won the combined event. In world championships Sherbo finished second in the combined event, floor exercise, and vault in 1991 in Indianapolis, Ind. In 1992 in Paris he was first in the pommel horse and the rings and second in the floor exercise. He placed first or second in four events of the 1992 European championships in Budapest, winning the floor exercise and the vault. In 1992 Sherbo became the first gymnast to win six gold medals in one Olympics and won more gold medals than any other athlete at the Olympic Games in Barcelona, Spain. He earned individual victories in the pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and combined exercises and won a team gold medal in gymnastics as a member of the Unified Team, which consisted of athletes from the former Soviet republics. At the 1996 Games in Atlanta, Ga., Sherbo won bronze medals in the individual combined exercises, the vault, the parallel bars, and the horizontal bar.
