SHIMMY


Meaning of SHIMMY in English

jazz dance that was originally popular among American blacks at least as early as 1900. Its movements consist of trembling the shoulders or the entire body. After its appearance in Broadway musicals in 1919 and 1922 it became, in somewhat diluted form, a craze in U.S. ballrooms. It has counterparts in the Caribbean (e.g., the banda of Trinidad) and in West Africa.
