Situated on the Tunga River (a headstream of the Tungabhadra), it is a road and rail junction, reexporting areca nuts, rice, coffee, and pepper. Industries include rice and oilseed milling and cotton processing. Cloth is handloomed as a cottage industry. The town's schools of education, commerce, arts and science, and law, Kamala Nehru Memorial National College for Women, and other colleges are affiliated with the University of Mysore. Pop. (1981) 151,783.
