town, Katowice wojewdztwo (province), south-central Poland. It is a northern suburb of Katowice city and is situated in the Upper Silesia coalfield and industrial district. Local industry includes coal mining, ironworking, the manufacture of such metal products as boilers and hardware, and brewing. The town was known as Laurahtte in World War II during its occupation by the Germans. Pop. (1990 est.) 80,400.
