SIGLUFJRDHUR

town, northern Iceland, situated on a small inlet of the Greenland Sea. The town is somewhat isolated from the rest of the country. At one time it was a major fishing port and the centre of Iceland's herring-fishing industry, with several freezing, curing, and canning plants and exported herring meal and oil. After 1970, however, the industry diminished in importance and size because of the decline in herring fishing. Pop. (1983 est.) 1,915.
