city, north-central Uttar Pradesh state, northern India. It is situated north-northwest of Lucknow, along the Sarayan River. Sitapur was a military centre under the British and contains a military cantonment. Located at the junction of several roads and rail lines, the city serves as a marketplace for grain and other crops. There are sugar and plywood industries and a hospital specializing in diseases of the eye. The area in which Sitapur is situated constitutes a level plain between the Gomati and Ghaghara rivers. Most of the surrounding land is under cultivation or is forested; rice, wheat, and barley are grown. Pop. (1991 prelim.) city, 120,595.
