city, southeastern Alaska, U.S., at the north end of the Lynn Canal, the northernmost point on the Inside Passage (Alaska Marine Highway). Founded in the 1890s as the gateway to the Yukon and Klondike goldfields, it owed its importance to being the Pacific coastal terminus of the White Pass (2,913 feet ) through the Boundary Ranges and of the White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR) railway from Whitehorse, head of navigation on the Yukon River in Canada. The railway suspended service in 1982, but a portion of the lower line was later reopened for tourist travel. Cruise ships and ferries call at the ice-free port, and Klondike Highway 2 links the town with the Alaska Highway. Nearby is Reid Falls (300 feet ). Inc. 1900. Pop. (1990) 692.
