SOLLENTUNA

Meaning of SOLLENTUNA in English

city in the ln (county) of Stockholm, east-central Sweden. It is composed of several northern suburbs of Stockholm, including Helenelund, Tureberg, Hggvik, Norrviken, Gillbo, and Viby. It consists of low-lying areas, as well as more or less rolling, wooded heights that reach up to 230 feet (70 m). Beginning in 1600, when the nobility in Stockholm started building manor houses in the area, Sollentuna's growth was tied to that of the capital. Since 1900 Sollentuna has changed from an agricultural community to a modern urban district as a result of both industrial and suburban development. The coming of bus links with Stockholm accelerated its growth. Although largely residential, it has some important industries, including the manufacture of yeast, tools, and cement. Among notable buildings are a 12th-century church and, in Tureberg, St. Eriks Church (192730). Pop. (1992 est.) mun., 51,790.
