also called Jayavardhanapura Kotte, legislative and judicial capital of Sri Lanka. It is located about 5 miles (8 km) southeast of Colombo, the country's administrative capital, in the suburb of Kotte. The new parliamentary complex of buildings, which are situated on an island in a lake and in a region of reclaimed swamps, opened in 1982. The name Sri Jayewardenepura is derived from the name of the 15th-century Sinhalese capital at Kotte (q.v.).
