STEINHEIM SKULL

human fossil remnant found in 1933 by the Murr River about 12 miles (19 km) north of Stuttgart, Ger. Associated with bones of elephant and rhinoceros, the skull has been dated to the Second Interglacial Period. The skull is characterized by an estimated cranial capacity of 1,100 cubic cm, a long, slightly flattened skull, moderately heavy browridges, and a rounded occiput. It does not deviate from the normal range of variation for these traits in modern man. Steinheim is usually classified as an early subspecies of Homo sapiens, called Homo sapiens heidelbergensis.
