STORSTRMS

amtskommune (county), Denmark, created in 1970 from the former counties of Maribo and Prst. It has an area of 1,311 sq mi (3,396 sq km). The southernmost part of Denmark, the county embraces southeastern Sjlland (Zealand); Lolland, Falster, and Mn islands; and several islets. Impressive limestone cliffs occur at Stevns Klint and Mns Klint on Sjlland. Fertile clay loams support mixed farming and dairying, and there are fisheries and meat-canning plants. The principal population centres are Nykbing Falster (the administrative seat), Nstved, Vordingborg (qq.v.), Maribo, and Nakskov. Pop. (1982 est.) 259,624.
