extinct genus of large brachiopods, or lamp shells, found as fossils in Devonian marine rocks (408 to 360 million years old). Stringocephalus is widely distributed and occurs in western North America, Asia, and northern Europe. Several forms are known. The shell is characterized by a well-developed, curved, beaklike structure.
