formerly Keflavk, town, southwestern Iceland, on Reykja Peninsula, overlooking Faxa Bay. It was administratively created when Keflavk merged with the nearby towns of Njardvk and Hafnir in 1994. A fishing port and local market centre, Sudurnesjabaer is the site of an international airport as well as of a U.S. air base, built during World War II and later established as a North Atlantic Treaty Organization base (1951). A paved road 30 miles (48 km) long connects the airfield to Reykjavk. Pop. (1994 est.) 10,347.
