city, seat of Talladega County, east central Alabama, U.S., in the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains. Founded in 1834 on the site of an Indian village on the edge of Creek land, its name was derived from the Indian words talla and dega, meaning bordertown. In 1813 Andrew Jackson's Tennessee Volunteers defeated a large force of Creek Indians there. The city is in an agricultural region, with marble, limestone, and iron deposits, which form the basis for its industries. Talladega College was founded in 1867. A division of the Talladega National Forest is to the east. Inc. 1835. Pop. (1990) 18,175.
