city, capital of Tarnobrzeg wojewdztwo (province), southwestern Poland. It received city rights in 1593. Located on the banks of the Vistula River on trade routes linking Warsaw to the cities of southeastern Poland, Tarnobrzeg has long been a leading centre of manufacturing and commerce. Its economy is based on food processing, the manufacture of machine tools, and paper and textile production. Since the early 1950s Tarnobrzeg has grown rapidly because of the discovery of sulfur deposits on the outskirts of the city; the deposits are among the richest in the world. Pop. (1990 est.) 45,900.
