Meaning of TITAGARH in English

also spelled Tittagarh city, southeastern West Bengal state, northeastern India. It lies just east of the Hooghly (Hugli) River and is part of the Calcutta urban agglomeration. The city was once a fashionable place of residence for Europeans. Titagarh was constituted a municipality in 1895, when it was separated from Barrackpore municipality. Connected by road and rail with Calcutta, it has jute and paper milling, manufactures glass and textile machinery, and processes tea. Pop. (1981) 104,534; (1991) 114,085.
