Meaning of TOMAR in English

city and concelho (municipality), Santarm district, central Portugal, on the Nabo River, a tributary of the Zzere, northeast of Lisbon. The city contains notable examples of architecture, including the ruined castle of the Knights Templar; the 12th-century church and castle of the Order of Christ (Ordem de Cristo; founded 1314), which played an important part in the voyages of discovery; a 16th-century church built in the Manueline style (a mixture of Moorish and florid Gothic) by Joo de Castilho; and the Renaissance church of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception (Nossa Senhora da Conceio; 1579). The ruined palace of Henry the Navigator was restored in the 16th century. Tomar is an agricultural trade centre (olive oil, wine, fruits, vegetables), and some timbering is carried on nearby. Pop. (1981) city, 14,821; (1987 est.) concelho, 46,300.
